Dear Roag Member,

February is fast drawing to a close and, as we approach the third month of the year, the KZN trail season finally kicks up a gear and, thankfully, it ooks to be building into something like what we remember from the heady pre-2020 era.

This weekend sees the Illovo Wartburg Classic on Saturday, the penultimate event of the 2022 Quattro ROAG Series, while the final event in the popular KZN series is the Hyundai Hillcrest Classic at Shongweni on March 12.

March looks to be busy with a smattering of events to get the heart racing, and then things just keep getting better as the weeks roll by.

Pre-Entries Close: 22 February 2023

ENTRIES CLOSE ON WEDNESDAY

The Wartburg Illovo Classic is often considered to be the opening test for trail runners and mountain bikers as they shake of the after-effects of holiday season and prepare for the big stage races later in the year.

This year the popular Wartburg Kirchdorf School is well on track to display their normal slick organisational skills, and riders and runners can expect a well-run event that shows off some of the wonderful trails in the region.

The longest distance event has been shortened slightly this year and the elite riders will be tackling a route which has been measured to just under 60km – which has thrown up a ripple effect as juniors and youth riders are now eligible to take part the longer event, and prizes will be awarded for both categories in both the 60km and the 45km. For the ROAG Series, however, points will only be awarded to juniors and youth riders in the 60km. Any youth and junior rider who has entered the shorter event and wants to upgrade to 60km is asked to contact info@roag.co.za urgently.

Other events for the mountain bikers are 45km, 25km and 10km, while the trail runners can choose between the 7km and 14km runs. For those over-achievers who feel one event is simply not enough, runners and riders can enter the multi-sport categories and take on the 25km MTB as well as one of the two trail runs.

The other riding community takes over Shongweni

Shongweni is known all over the world as a centre for polo and horse-riding, but on March 12th the KZN cycling community will be taking to their saddles for the final leg of the Quattro ROAG Series when the renamed Hyundai Hillcrest MTB Classic takes over the facility.

MTB riders will be able to take part in a 40km or 20km ride, while the trail runners will have to choose between the 20km or 10km runs.

All the routes will start and finish on the top fields and riders and runners will be taken on routes that mostly traverse the sweeping cane fields of the Shongweni area.

Entrants will get a discount for early bird entries in February … so don’t delay and get your entry in now.

CLUB ROAG MEMBERSHIPS OPEN

As the sports industry returns to a relative sense of familiarity, it is time to embrace the new normal and plan for an exciting, action-packed 2023. The past two years have seen some significant changes in the world at large, as well as the local sporting scene and, as always, ROAG is adapting and moving forward.

For cyclists, one of the biggest changes that will impact your competitive riding has nothing to do with the pandemic. Cycling SA's decision to enforce club memberships means you now have to belong to a club to purchase a CSA membership or CSA racing license.

Club ROAG - an extension of the standard, free ROAG Membership - is one of the most cost-effective ways to belong to a cycling club. As a virtual club, Club ROAG has been able to keep our prices to just R145 for an annual membership (which lasts from January 1 to December 31). As a member of Club ROAG, you can then get a full racing license or membership from CSA, which in turn enables you to enter any CSA-sanctioned event without purchasing a Day License; gives you medical and emergency evacuation cover at events; and includes accommodation and coaching discounts.

In contrast, Athletics South Africa's fee structures to register a club are so exorbitant that ROAG has opted to de-register from Athletics South Africa and we are no longer affiliated to ASA.

If you're interested in renewing your Club ROAG Membership now for 2023 then please CLICK HERE or for more information CLICK HERE. It will only take you a few minutes and will cost you as little as R145! PLUS your membership will include the following benefits:

Affiliation to various governing bodies. Club ROAG is officially affiliated to the following national bodies so you can join: CSA- Cycling South Africa, EMBA- Ethekwini Mountain Bike Association, TSA- Triathlon South Africa.

Discounts on all ROAG & Club ROAG Merchandise and sporting apparel (see package options below and CLICK HERE to purchase yours now!.

And … if you're hoping to be really organised and kitted out for the new season, please see the info page for details on our trendy, top quality cycling and running apparel still on offer at 2022 prices.
